Belly Dance Update from IAMED – 06 JULY 2009

18 February 2009

Thank you to everyone who participated in IAMED’s most recent essay contest. All of the stories were entertaining and memorable indeed! After much deliberation, we have finally chosen the winners and now we are sharing their great stories with YOU! 1st Place – Emily Andrews

“Location: Castroville Artichoke Festival in Castroville, CA
Time: Saturday afternoon
Weather Conditions: Sunny and very windy
Stage Conditions: Elevated stage approximately four feet high, slanted in all sorts of directions, covered with canopy, canvas walls on two sides
Audience: Families happily sitting on bales of hay, eating cotton candy and kettle korn

Our troupe danced at the Artichoke Festival every year, and it’s usually a good time.  Who doesn’t enjoy noshing some fried artichoke hearts?”  (more)

2nd Place – Robin “Shalimar” Kelsey

“Memorable moments in my belly dance “lifetime”, have been abundant and not always been about myself, they also include my experiences with my dance troupe. For 35 years I’ve been learning, choreographing, performing, and teaching this wonderful art and there are always some very memorable moments to share. Probably my most memorable moment was when I first began to perform at the age of 25…” (more)

3rd Place – Adriane

“Everything about it was weird.  It was 8:45 in the morning when I pulled into the parking lot.  Standing in the parking lot was a clown donning a striped rainbow top hat with a matching suit and Ronald McDonald shoes.  A few old men loitered about smoking cigars in the fresh morning air.

One of the old men walked over to me and asked, “Are you the belly dancer?”  (more)

Honorable Mention – Kristina Moseley

“My most memorable experience is how I got started in Belly Dance. I was at Target in my usual solemn mood, in my usual jeans and t-shirt, looking at workout videos once again trying to find something, anything, to help me lose weight. I wasn’t very active, and the usual workout videos would leave me hurting and not wanting to do them again. So I was looking for something out of the ordinary. Something fun, that would hold my interest and not kill me in the process, or injure my back any further…”  (more)

Honorable Mention – Pam Emerson

“My story starts out sad. In October of 2005, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. To say the least, I was totally devastated. She was only 72 and had always been healthy and vibrant.  She belonged to our local hiking club for years.  It was at that moment I realized that life has no guarantees and that each day is a precious gift…”  (more)

Honorable Mention – Mia Serra

“People often come up to me, usually about 30 seconds before I am about to perform, and ask me whether I am afraid my bra might pop off during the performance. I shrug my shoulders, and add that thought to the those buzzing about my head behind my glorious smile. In fact it has happened. But always in the toilets (the glamorous green room of the belly dancer) before performance…”  (more)

Honorable Mention – Rachel Allen

“For the past 2 1/2 years I have had the joy of teaching the local Junior High Girls Bellydance in Southeast Saskatchewan, Canada.  This, by far, has been my most rewarding experience and one I volunteer for with my costs covered by the school. Each class of each session consists of fun, smiles, giggles, challenges and growth…”  (more)

Congratulations to the winners!
